Description
This is a bowl made by Floyd, Virginia artisan, Jim Grant, from the burl of a maple tree. The bowl was turned on a wood lathe and finished with food grade finish.
A burl is place on the trunk of a tree that has formed a rounded outgrowth. Many burls are formed beneath the soil surface and are discovered when the tree dies or falls over. The wood grain found in burls is astonishingly complex and, when turned on Jim’s wood lathe, reveals designs of stunning complexity and beauty. Because burl wood is extremely dense and resistant to splitting, Jim’s bowls and vases are treasures that will last a lifetime and beyond.
